Locked out of your house? A calm, step-by-step plan

It always happens at the worst time: the door clicks shut, and the keys are on the counter inside. Before you do anything you'll regret, take a breath. A house lockout is one of the most routine calls a locksmith handles, and most are solved without a scratch on your door.

First, check the easy ways in

Walk the house once. More lockouts end here than people expect:

  • A back or side door that's unlocked.
  • A garage keypad, or a garage you can get into another way.
  • A spare you left with a neighbor, a family member, or hidden (and then forgot).
  • A window that's genuinely accessible and safe to use — not a second-storey climb.

If someone else on the lease or title can bring a key quickly, that's almost always the cheapest fix.

What not to do

Please don't:

  • Force the door or kick it. A new lock is cheap; a cracked frame or a broken door is not.
  • Jam a card or screwdriver into the lock. On a deadbolt it won't work, and on a latch you can damage the mechanism and turn a lockout into a repair.
  • Pull out a drill. Drilling a lock is sometimes the right call, but it's a last resort a professional judges — not a first move.

When to call a locksmith

If there's no easy way in, call. A mobile locksmith comes to you and, in most cases, opens a standard residential lock without damaging it. Tell them:

  • Your exact address and a callback number.
  • The kind of lock (knob, deadbolt, smart lock) if you know.
  • Whether anyone — a child or a pet — is inside, which changes the urgency.

Expect to be asked for ID and proof you live there when they arrive. That's not red tape; it's how a good locksmith makes sure they're opening the right door for the right person. For how we handle this, see our guide to house lockouts.

After you're back in

A lockout is a nudge worth acting on:

  • If the key is lost for good, rekey the lock so the missing key is useless. Here's rekey vs. replace.
  • Cut a spare and leave it somewhere sensible.
  • If the lock was already sticky or hard to turn, fix it now rather than waiting for it to fail.
